WORLD MAPS -- "NOVA TOTIUS TERRARUM Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula". (Bologna), J.B. Cavazza, 1642 (=1643). Engr. world map in later colouring, of which the left side - a strip of paper 61 millimeters wide (incl. the 'arm') - was partially redrawn/replaced in ink very professionally. 355 x 560 mm. (Laid down on Japanese paper).
Rare world map which is specifically mentioned as occurring in the work 'Geographicae Crucis Fabrica' (1643) by the Jesuit J.-B. Riccioli (De Backer & Sommervogel VI, 1798), but Shirley 357 writes: "(…) none of those [other geographical works by R.] I have consulted contains any world map". Shirley: "Cavazza's map stands in an Italianate decorated frame with two curved side supports. These arms or brachia were intended to be cut out and mounted thereby making an instrument capable of determining which areas of the world might be in either sunlight or darkness at any given time". The map is based on the geography contained in C.J Visscher's map of 1639.€ 1800
