Fascinating view on the ruins left by the devastating explosion of a gunpowder-ship in 1807; we see king Louis Napoleon delivering a speech to the homeless civilians. The light of the torches and the glow of the fires add drama to the scene. Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853) was a 19th-century painter from the Northern Netherlands. He played an important role as mentor and tutor to a group of young artists, one of whom was Jozef Israëls. - Muller 5699; Overvoorde 4150.€ 400
