FORE-EDGE PAINTING -- BLANC, L. Histoire de dix ans 1830-1840. Brux., Meline, Cans et Cie, 1847. 2 vols. (4), 528; (4), 420 pp. W. front. portr. and w. many wood-engr. plates. Bound in cont., uniform, richly gilt, full brown mor., inside dentelles, gilt and marbled edges, richly dec. gilt spines and sides, both front sides showing a soldier waving a Napoleonic flag, both back sides showing a soldier waving his hat. (Apart from some slight chafing at extremes in v.g. condition).
Edition de grand luxe, both volumes equipped with a double fore-edge painting (which can be made visible while bending the block both ways - which is quite rare: to the left, but also to the right!). One shows a soldier waving a Napolenic flag above a soldier waving his hat and the other shows a soldier waving a Napoleonic flag above a soldier saluting, completely in style with the illustrations on the front and back boards. The years 1830-1840 were dominated by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, who later became known as Napoleon III.€ 400
