This work was the first textbook of Newtonian science in the Republic. It put an end to the dominant position of Cartesianism in the Republic. It contained the essence of his lectures: 's-Gravesande took the view that all scientific reasoning should be based on the principle that experiment and observation were the foundation of the investigation of Nature. "During his two-year stay in England, 's Gravesande was completely captured by Newton's empirical, inductive, and mathematical science." (Berkel, p. 71-2). W. bookplate of Robert Montgomery (of) Convoy, member of a family of Scottish descent. - Second, and enlarged edition of vol. I; first edition of vol. II. -DSB V, 209; Bierens de Haan 1806.
