Frederick Henry (1584-1647), prince of Orange and count of Nassau, established by his military victories the general territorial limits of the United Provinces of the Netherlands. The youngest son of William I (William the Silent), founder of the Dutch republic, he followed his half-brother Maurice of Nassau as stadholder (governor) of the five principal provinces in 1625 and also of Groningen in 1640. As captain- and admiral-general, Frederick Henry halted the renewed Spanish offensives against the republic and captured numerous cities from Spain between 1627 and 1645. During his reign the golden age of Dutch art flourished. These 'mémoires' cover Frederick Henry's military successes. - Barbier III, 195.
