JAPAN -- OVERMEER FISSCHER, J.F. v. Bijdrage tot de kennis v.h. Japansche Rijk. Amst., J. Müller & Comp., 1833. (x), 320 pp. W. 15 lithogr. plates on chine appliqué, exquisitely cold. by hand, all under tissue guards. Lge-4°. Cont. h. mor. extra, gold dec. spine raised in compartments, moire cloth sides ruled in gilt and blind tooled. (Corners a bit bumped, some marginal foxing, bookplate & bookseller's description tipped in on paste down, but a very handsome copy of this sumptuous work).

Johan Frederik van Overmeer Fisscher (1800-1848), travelled via Batavia to Deshima in Japan in 1820. He first worked there as a clerk and from about 1825 as a warehouse manager. In 1822 he made the court trip to the imperial capital Edo together with the chief of Deshima, J. Cock Blomhoff, among others. De luxe edition with beautifully coloured lithographs.
