ESCHER, M.C. (1898-1972). Sphere with fish. (Bentveld, Andreas Landshoff Productions B.V., 1972). Sculpture cast in brown polyester resin. 130 mm Ø. Monogrammed 'MCE' and dated '1940' in one of the folds. On the or., oriental style, openwork wooden stand. (Wooden stand a bit dam. (small pieces of wood carving missing)).
Reproduction of a wooden sculpture carved by Escher in only 1 copy in 1940 (now in 'Kunstmuseum' (formerly 'Gemeentemuseum') at The Hague). The surface of the sphere consists of stylized fish bodies, intricately interlaced. Produced in 500 copies, of which this is # 193. With the original certificate, stating that "'Sphere with fish' (…) had the full participation and final approval of the artist before his death in March, 1972". Sphere in very good condition.€ 800
