VERTOT, R.-A. Histoire des Chevaliers Hospitalisiers de Saint Jean de Jerusalem, appellés depuis Chevaliers de Rhodes, & aujourd'hui Chevaliers de Malte. Rev. & corr. ed. Amst., Par la Compagnie, (=fictitious imprint), 1772. 5 vols. Fine cont. mottled cf. w. raised bands, richly dec. gilt backs, sides ruled in gilt, red and black labels, gilt coat of arms of France on all sides, red edges. (Spine ends vol. 1 sl. dam., lower edges of vols. 1-2 partly burnt/blackened by fire (sl. affecting right side of lower margin), else a fine set).
First published in 1726 Vertot’s history on the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, commonly known as the Knights Hospitaller and later Knights of Rhodes and Knights of Malta, was a huge succes. It displays an heroic struggle between the Christians, led by the Frenchmen, and the Infidels. The papacy however was treated with no respect and the book was immediately condemned by the Order of Malta and put on the Index of forbidden books in Rome in 1728. The fifth part contains a chapter with "Discours sur l’Alcoran", pp 382-416.€ 240
