BAUER, Marius Alexander Jacques ('Marius'). (1867-1932). Collection of 15 plain lithographs which were published in 'De Kroniek', between 1895 and 1897, including a preliminary study in pencil by the artist himself on the v° of one of them. All lithographs c. 360 x 240 mm (image size), paper sizes vary and show signs of cropping. (Margins a bit chipped and split in places, small hole in image nr. 33, some folds visible in places, a bit foxed/age-toned, but in good condition).

To Bauer's lesser known works - published under the pseudonym Rusticus - belong his fine satirical contributions to 'De Kroniek', a Dutch socio-cultural and literary magazine, founded in 1895 by Pieter Lodewijk Tak. The lithographs, satirizing national and international events, are presented here in their first states - before lettering - of which 13 are also signed in pencil by the artist. Present: 9, 11, 12, 19, 23, 31, 33, 34, 35 (2x), 36, 38, 41, 48, 51 (numbers following H. Slechte, 'Marius Bauer als kritisch kunstenaar', (2010)). The numbers 9, 11, 12, 48 and 51 printed on slightly thicker paper than the others. One of the 2 prints nr. 35 and nr. 12 are not signed. The original preliminary study, probably for the print "Athene" (Slechte nr. 44) in pencil on the back of plate nr. 9, and the fingerprints in the margins here and there, might indicate that the prints derive from Bauer's print shop.
