Third enlarged edition (but the first illustrated with engravings!) of one of the first monographs on the island Sumatra (in the former Dutch East Indies) by the English Orientalist William Marsden (1754-1836). The first edition was publ. in 1783. "This book gave Marsden a reputation that still holds today. He was an orientalist, in the service of the East India Company, and resided in Sumatra in 1771-79.
