PHILOSOPHY -- HUET, P.D. Traité philosophique de la foiblesse de l'esprit humain. Amst., H. du Sauzet, 1723. xl, 296 pp. W. engr. portr. of the author by Jongman and a fine vignette by Picart of a printing press on the ti.-p. Sm-8°. Cont. mottled cf. w. raised bands, red label & blind tooled borders on both sides. (Libr. tickets on upper paste down, upper margin first free endpaper torn off, but a very good copy).

First edition, composed circa 1690, of a work that was regarded by the author as his best one, but he did not dare publish it during his lifetime (according to the publisher's preface). Huet was a severe critic of Descartes (whose Cogito ergo sum was so deftly dissected by him that he finally transformed it in "I thought, therefore, perhaps I was"). - Cioranescu 35617.
