EMBLEM BOOKS -- ALCIATUS, A. Emblemata. Lyon, M. Bonhomme for G. Rouillé ("Guliel. Rovilium"), 1551. 226, (6) pp. W. ti. & dedic. lvs. within woodcut borders, 197 woodcut emblematical ills. & 14 woodcuts of trees all attributed to P. Eskrich, all within woodcut borders by "P.V." (= P. Vase = P. Eskrich). Old vellum w. gilt dec. ti-label. (Bind. skilfully restored, a few tiny wormholes, margins cut (affecting ti-p. a bit), (faintly) stained throughout, a bit thumbed in places).

One of the most complete Latin editions of Alciatus' Emblemata. Alciatus wrote the emblems as epigrams for his humanist friends and sent a selection of them to his friend Peutinger at the court of Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg. They were first published under the title Emblemata by Steyner at Augsburg in 1531 without Alciatus' consent, and met a tremendous success. - This copy with "Rouille" title. Adams/Rawles/Saunders F-031; Landwehr 52; Praz p. 250; Baudrier X, p. 221.
