OBSCURORUM VIRORUM. Epistolæ. 550 pp. - Bound with: LAMENTATIONES obscurorum virorum epistola. D. Erasmi Roterodami, (...). 192 pp. - London (i.e. Germany), apud editorem, 1689. 2 in 1 vol. 12°. Rebound in old vellum. (Inner upper hinge loosening, outer margin first four leaves sl. chipped, sl. browned throughout).

Reprint of the infamous original published between 1515 and 1517 as a humanistic response to the scholastic Clarorum Virorum Epistolae (Reuchlin, 1514). The satirical collection of letters enjoyed great popularity throughout Europe and was much appreciated by Erasmus and More, but as they originated in a feud between the Dominican order in Cologne and the German humanistic scholars, the letters always remained controversial. Pope Leo X forbade further reproduction of the letters in 1520 - hence the clandestine, anonymous prints - and Martin Luther disapprovingly called the author a "Hanswurst".
