One of the most important and earliest publications of the Dutch presence in modern Guyana and one of the rarest titles on Surinam. It is one of the first printed reports on the Dutch Colonies of Berbice and Essequibo and the only existing eyewitness information on Berbice dating from this period. The first part of the book consists of van Berkel’s voyage to the Colony of Berbice between 1670 and 1674 (incl. descriptions of several Indian tribes, and treatment of slaves), the second part is a fictitious journey to Suriname made in the 1680s. - Doorne/Kempen, Suriname-cat. v.d. UB A'dam, 0599; Sabin 4874; Tiele 95 (erroneously calls for 1693 as year of publication); Van Eeghen/v.d. Kellen 258; Klaversma/Hannema 147. Extensively: v.d. Bel, Hulsman & Wagenaar "The Voyages of Adriaan van Berkel to Guiana: Amerindian-Dutch Relationships in 17th-Century Guyana" (2014). - From the library of J.W. Six and with his bookplate. - See Cat.
