Very rare work, comprising fine series of important prints illustrating the Old and New Testament to which the author added his descriptions/explanations. The artists were a motley crew, but among them were the best artists of the time: Pieter van der Borcht ('Bijbelsche Tafereelen', 99 prints in total!), Jacob de Gheyn, Hendrick Goltzius (i.a. The Passion, complete series of 12 prints, and complete series of 'heroes' (10 prints in total)), Karel van Mander, Adriaen Collaert after Maerten de Vos (Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit), Claes Jansz. Visscher, a.m.o. The author, born at Amsterdam about 1585, died there in April 1656, and buried at Alkmaar, was a member of the Mennonite Waterlander (Toren) congregation at Amsterdam. He published - together with his brother Dirk - a large number of writings, partly because he was forced to earn his living in this way, partly also because he felt an inner call to do so. - Lacking the following plates (following Visser's numbering): 1a, 1b, 1c (?), 54a, 68a, 103, 149-152, 157, 157a, 278, 279, 298a, 354, 355, 357bis, 358bis, 359bis, 363bis, 364bis, 365bis, 373a, 402 which include also 4 (of 5) maps, and possibly 386 to 397. A very incomplete copy was auctioned in June 1982 at Van Gendt's. - Visser, Broeders in de geest, dl. 2, bijlage IV,2 and bijlage I, 13.b1; Van der Coelen p. 164 ff. Poortman, Bijbel & Prent, dl. II, p. 34 ff.
