PARIS -- "LUTETIAE vulgo, Paris, urbis Galliarum primariae, non Europae solius, sed orbis totius celeberimae prospectus". Amst. F. de Wit, n.d. (c. 1680). Engr. panorama of Paris, printed on 4 conjoined sheets, in cont. colouring (bottom right numbered 1-4). Lower border consisting of 18 letterpress columns in French, Dutch and Latin. Total size 61 x 214 cm. Laid down on wooden multiplex mount. (Unfortunately parts of the image and parts of the printed text below the view are missing, the Dutch and French texts are almost completely present, the Latin text is seriously damaged).
Possibly an unrecorded edition of this fine panorama. The texts in French, Dutch and Latin, giving the description of Paris, have all three the imprint of Frederick de Wit. Reference to De Wit's possible predecessor, which was published in 1617 by Pieter van den Keere and François van den Hoeye, is given by B. v. 't Hoff. 'Grote Stadspanorama's gegraveerd in Amsterdam sedert 1609'. In: Jaarboek v.h. Genootschap Amstelodamum, (1955), p. 113-4 (however not mentioning this De Wit edition). Van den Keere's panorama is also depicted by Schilder, Monumenta Cart. Neerl., VIII, p. 409-11 & 412-13: it totally differs from this panorama by De Wit (also not mentioning this De Wit edition). - Sold w.a.f., not subject to return. Shipping will require extra postage & handling, given the dimensions of the mount. NB Can only be picked up or sent via our courier service.€ 3000
