Caert-thresoor, Inhoudende de tafelen des gantsche Werelts Landen, met beschryvingen verlicht, tot lust vanden Leser, nu alles van nieus met groote costen en(de) arbeyt toegereet. Middelburch, B. Langenes ende men vintse te coop by C. Claesz., (1598)]. 2 parts in 1 vol. (10 (of 16)), 462 pp, blank; 188 (of 192) pp. W. 163 (of 169) engr. maps by P. Kaerius and Jod. Hondius I in text. (Lacking the first 3 lvs. of the first part (incl. the title-p. and allegorical engr. of the 'Victoria'), and of the 2nd part pp. 103-106, 123-124, 157-158, and 189-196, (4)). 8°-obl. Cont. vellum. (Bind. warped, outer corners of nearly all lvs. dog-eared, first 5 lvs. have loss of margin and in need of careful restoration, p. 113-4 w. loss of margin and text, throughout traces of (intensive) use/thumbed/some stains in places).

Very rare first edition of this important small format atlas which unchained a whole new type of atlas which was probably produced for the smaller purse: "Under the name of this obscure printer of Middelburg falls a series of atlases, easily the best in this bibliography." And: "(Caert-Thresoor) sets a new standard for minor atlases. The maps are extremely well-engraved: neat and clear, elegantly composed.", according to Koeman Lan 1, vol.II, p. 252. The texts were edited by scholars like Petrus Bertius and Jacobus Viverius. Maps lacking: 'Insulae Mosambique', 'St. Helena', 'Brasilia', 'Fretum Magellanicum', 'Nova Guinea' and 'Ins. Vaygats'). On the blanks following the first part 18th c. annotations occur which give rise to the thought that the atlas was still in use at that moment. One of the 18th c owners, a certain Jan Duindoorn, has written his name at the foot of the dedication. - V.d. Krogt 341:01 ("only nine copies of the Langenes edition are known."); Moes & Burger 388; on the 2 world maps see Shirley 211.
