A fictitious place of publishing and printer were used to avoid censorship. Van Meteren , Antwerp 1535 - London 1612, is one of the best informed authors on the Dutch revolt against Spain. His work describes roughly the period between 1369 and 1609. He managed to collect many documents useful for his history and had many important contacts with men of state. His book contains also noteworthy information on commerce and shipping of his time, especially on the voyages to the North and the East Indies. This edition surprisingly not often on the market. - Verduyn, pp. 210-14; Haitsma Mulier/v.d. Lem 333d (note); NNBW VII, 868-70.
