GUICCIARDINI, L. Belgium dat is Nederlandt, ofte Beschrijvinge derselviger Provincien ende Steden. Amst, J. Janssonius, 1648. (8), 337 (=391), (24) pp. W. fine engr. ti., full-p. engr. w. coats of arms of the 17 Provinces, 12 double-p. maps and 85 engr. plans and views of uneven size, for the greater part double-p. Fol. Cont. blind tooled vellum over wooden brds. w. raised bands and brass clasps & catches. (Top of spine rep., upper joint partly split, lower back corner a bit dam., stamp on engr. ti, a few small rep. in places, a few marg. stains, 1 plate loose, but else a fine and complete copy).

Very good, complete and clean copy of one of the most famous 17th c. townbooks. Lodovico Guicciardini (1521-89), Italian businessman and author, left Italy in 1538 and settled down in Antwerp. This is the fourth edition in Dutch of his famous description of the principalities and cities of the Low Countries. The table of contents of this Janssonius edition described in Guicciardini Illustratus, 23 has 2 more plates 'Rheinberg' and 'Middelburg-Stadt-huys' not present in our edition but also not called for in the 'Bladt-Wijser'.
