Friedrich Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864), great German Naturalist, served in Indonesia between 1835 and 1864 as a surgeon with the Netherlands Indies Army, as a member of the Natural Sciences Commission, and later as Inspector for Natural Science Investigation and in charge of chinchona cultivation (he imported chinchona-plants from Brazil and thus founded the world's largest chinchona-production: 98% of the world-market in the hey-days of chinchona exports). This encyclopaedic work can still be considered as the most important one on vulcanology, geology & natural history of Java under Dutch colonial administration. A Unique Set, complete with the Atlas in a matching binding. Extremely rare in such condition and completeness. - Bastin/Brommer, n 451, n456, n465 & n467; Landwehr 325.
