GREAT BRITAIN -- RAPIN de THOYRAS, (P.). Dissertation sur les Whigs et les Torys. The Hague (=Rouen) Ch. Le Vier, 1717. (14), 184 pp. W. ti. printed in red & black, & engr. ti-vign. Old (worn) wrps., uncut.

First edition. In this work "Rapin explained impartially and for a non-English audience the origins and particularities of the British party system. (…) It aroused much interest and was quickly translated into several languages and it established Rapin's reputation for writing an unbiased clear account of a complex subject." (Revue Voltaire, nr. 10, Oxf. 2010, p. 192ff: "Voltaire and the writings of Rapin de Thoyras" by Jane Godden). - Still highly topical! Paul de Rapin, lord of Thoyras (1661-1725), was a French protestant historian writing under English patronage. He is famous for his "Histoire d'Angleterre" (1724-1727).
