Sadeler (after Polidoro) dep. vases. Diff. sizes: 277 x 184 (largest) and 242 x 168 mm. (All trimmed close to plate edges, a bit soiled, rep. to first (=title) plate). -- Added: 2 knife handles (numbered 11 and 12 in the plate), published M. Sadeler, and the first plate of the 'Vasa' series (Edition Rome, 1628). -- (11).Ad 1: "The vases derive from a series that had been painted by Polidoro (c. 1499-1543) above the first floor windows of the Palazzo Milesi in the via della Maschera d'Oro in Rome. He designed and executed a whole series of elaborate painted schemes for the decoration of palace and house façades in Rome in the period 1520-27. They were painted in grisaille to imitate sculpture and reflected contemporary ideas about how such buildings would have been decorated in antiquity.
