BERG, Else (1877-1942). Heads of a man and a woman in front of an industrial landscape. c. 1927. Drawing in charcoal. 500 x 600 mm. Signed in lower right corner. Framed and glazed. (Uninspected out of frame, but in very good condition).

From the collection of Ton Meijer, inmate and friend of Else Berg and Mommie Schwarz. Sold in auction by Glerum (catalogue 252, lot 536) in November 2003. "Ze kwam er onder de indruk van de harde sociale realiteit en legde de arbeiders en hun werkomgeving vast in een monumentaal-realistische stijl, waar ook Charley Toorop rond deze tijd in ging werken." (Ligthart, Else Berg, cat. Frans Halsmuseum, p. 33). This drawing was depicted in 'De Groene Amsterdammer' with the title 'Industrie' (source: RKD). Also depicted in 'De Bergense School op reis' by R. Smithuis (Woerden, 2007), p. 28. From the site of the 'Joods Historisch Museum': "In [1927] she made a trip to the Belgian mining region around Liège, where she made paintings of miners, the circus and the funfair."
