(BOUTENS, P.C.). Naenia; tot de gedachtenis van Willem van Tets; waarbij zijn herdrukt de strofen In memoriam; geschreven van 12-18 juni 1900 en nu gegeven aan George van Tets. Parit crux beatos. (Haarlem, Joh. Enschedé en Zonen for the author, 1903). (34) lvs. W. 2 cold. initials by J.TH. Toorop, drawn and cold. by hand. 4°. Or. overlapping vellum w. ties. In modern slipcase. (A few small foxed spots in places, ties broken, but preserved).Printed in 12 copies only, according to the colophon, but 14 copies in total were actually published (including two publisher's archival copies). Boutens came under the influence of the English Arts & Crafts movement, and, accordingly, wanted to give special attention to the text, illustrations and binding of his poem. He is closely involved in designing the typography: a seventeenth-century typeface (Augustijn by Hendrik Claesz) and sturdy Dutch paper by Van Gelder Zonen are chosen. The vellum binding is reminiscent of the publications of Morris's own Kelmscott Press. Boutens also asks the famous painter Jan Toorop to make the decorations. The result is now one of the rarest Dutch 20th century bibliophile publications. A very fine copy.
