Amst., A. Boekholt, 1698. 2 in 1 vol. 384; 494 pp., last blank, incl. 2 diff. engr. fronts. Sm-8°. Cont. vellum. (Slightly browned, else a fine copy).

Popular and vehement anti-catholic work which lived through many editions. The 'historie' and the 'sermons' were written by a contemporary of the real Franciscan friar Corn. Adriaensz. Brouwer (1521-81) of Brugge (Belgium) and based on historical facts. The author describes several secret meetings where 'Brother' Cornelis flagellates women, preferably young and good-looking, in order to make them more disciplinable ("secrete penitentie"). These passages have a clear erotic undertone. The author has a very violent pen, especially when the Dutch reformists are concerned. - Waller 723; De Vries 419; Hayn/Got. I, 23/24. - Ex Bibliotheca J.W. Six.
