Arend Fokke Simonsz. (1755-1812) is best described as a humorous observer of his time. He played an important role in Amsterdam society and has entertained audiences and readers with his comical discourses. As a speaker and writer, he consciously conformed to 'the taste of the people' in order to secure himself an audience. Behind this pragmatism, however, was also a serious, ambitious and above all socially critical writer. - Very fine set.€ 200
