ROPS, Félicien (1833-1898). Letter to [Maurice] Siville. Biskra (Algeria), 2 January 1889. Ms. in ink on laid paper w. watermark 'Original Delta Fine' and w. crowned monogram, folded in two, signed 'Félicien Rops', r° only. 174 x 111 mm.

In December 1888, Rops left for North Africa. This letter was written in Biskra, the capital of the department of Batna, in eastern Algeria. Maurice Siville lived in Liège, belonged to the literary circle L'Elan and was editor of La Wallonie, which emerged from this circle. He was also 'director' of Caprice Revue. Rops asks Siville to thank Jules Destrée (1862-1936) for an article on Rops, which he apparently finds too praiseworthy. In the same year, 1889, Destrée married Marie Danse, a sister of Louise Danse, with whom Rops had an affair. - Cf. Leo v. Maris 'Deux lettres inédites de Félicien Rops'. In: Maatstaf. Vol. 27. (1979), p. 101-3.
