COLEOPTERA -- OLIVIER, (G.A.). Entomologie, ou histoire naturelle des insectes, avec leur caractères génériques et spécifiques, leur description, leur synonymie, et leur figure enluminée. Coléoptères. Paris, Baudouin, 1789-1808. 6 vols. W. 1 handcold. engr. frontispiece & 362 handcold. engr. plates. Fol. Beautiful early 19th c. full calf w. raised bands, richly dec. gilt backs (4 of six compartments bear the monogram "A.S."), red and green labels, sides ruled in gilt, and all edges red. (Copy on large paper, but the plates were published separately and apparently on smaller paper, so blank margins are skilfully added to make the plates fit, 12 text-pp. of fasc. 44 and 4 text-pp. of fasc. 46 (both vol. 3) are lacking (but blank lvs. are bound up instead), else an excellent and outstanding set in luxurious bindings with all the plates).

The fine plates, depicting thousands of various species of Coleoptera, are by J. Audebert, J.L. Reinold and Meunier, and engraved by Copia, Desfontaines, Manceau, Sellier and F.L. Swebach. Guillaume Antoine Olivier (1756-1814) was one of the greatest of the early French naturalists and an entomologist of high standing. He was a close friend of J.C. Fabricius and a patron of P.A. Latreille. His large collection of beetles (now for the larger part in the Paris Natural History Museum), gathered on journeys through European & Asiatic Turkey, Asia Minor, Persia, Egypt, and various Mediterranean Islands, is described in his famous work, by which he became nationally known as a great entomologist. - Nissen ZBI, 3012; W.
