SALM, A. Java. Naar schilderijen en teekeningen (…) op steen gebracht d. J.C. Greive. Amst., F. Buffa & Zn., (1865-72). W. title-p. printed in black and red and 24 chromolithogr. plates, partly finished by hand, hinged to mounts and loose as issued, each mount captioned w. a printed ticket in the outer right lower corner. Lge-fol. Ocl. clamshell portfol. w. ties, front side titled in gold. (Old mounts replaced by high (museum) standard acid free cardboard (0,5 mm), plates and separate tickets mounted w. dextrine, title-p. and plates a bit foxed in places, but a superb copy w. short conservation report by Floor Meijboom).
Abram Salm (1801-1876), tobacco planter, spent twenty-nine years in Indonesia and was a self-taught draughtsman and painter of numerous landscapes in Java, 24 of which were copied by the painter and lithographer J.C. Greive (1837-1891), at the request of the publisher Frans Buffa. The quality and finish of the plates in 'Java' is generally held to be Greive's and Buffa's greatest effort, and thus represent some of the finest 19th c. lithographic book illustrations to have been published in the Netherlands. Moreover Salm depicted landscapes which had scarcely before been depicted in topographical prints of Indonesia. Two versions of this work exist: tinted and coloured with hand finishing; this being a copy with hand finishing. The size of the plates vary slightly, but they are c. 360 x 265 mm each: 1.
