Rare early Dutch translations of Books 14 to 18 of the Amadis de Gaula, published in quarto, and here bound together in one volume. Plantin had started to publish the French Amadis de Gaule, also in quarto, in 1561, and had recommended the book for youth and for use at schools to teach the French language. Plantin also published a Dutch translation of the first Book of the Amadis de Gaule in 1563, and the second Book in 1568. Still, Dutch translations published in the Southern Netherlands before 1600 are almost not to be found, not listed in Adams, STC Dutch, Belgica Typographica, or Machiels. Of our set, with all Books published by Hendrick Barentsz. at Amsterdam, Books 14 to 17 are in second edition, dated 1620, 1621, 1622, and 1623 respectively, and Book 18 is in first edition, dated 1615. After Book 12 the Dutch Amadis was not illustrated except for a woodcut on title. Book 14 deals with the history of Sylvis de la Selve, and Books 15-18 contain the story of Spheramund and Amadis d'Astre. - Muller 2 (this copy); Buisman p. 475; Van Selm-Dongelmans, Amadis, 14.2 - 17.2, 18.1; Waller 158 (Books 13-21 in Amst., Rott., and Utrecht ed. from 1607-1625, incl. Books 14-18 conform our ed.
