LEIDEN -- MIERIS, F. v. Beschryving der stad Leyden. Dl. 1-2. Leyden, Honkoop & Van Hoogeveen, 1762-70. 2 in 1 vol. (24), 362, 90; (2), xxvi, (2), 24, 363-860, 68, 78 pp. W. dedic. engr., 1 fold. plan, 8 views on 4 plates, 13 engr. plates (of which 8 fold. & 2 lge-fold.) & extra plate of the monument of Boerhaave bound in. Fol. Splendidly bound in full cont. mottled cf. w. raised bands, richly dec. gilt backs, gilt dec. centerpieces containing a small coat of arms of Leiden on all sides, surrounded by 2 richly dec. borders, & blue marbled edges. (Spine ends slightly chipped, corners bumped, some minor foxing in places, without the continuation by Van Alphen).

According to the large paper, the fine binding and the rare dedication to Nic. van Alphen bound before the title-page, it most likely was a presentation copy for one of the magistrates. - A deluxe large paper copy, bound by the De Moor Bindery (active 1756-82). On this bindery see Storm van Leeuwen part IIA, p. 299ff. - Nijhoff/v. Hattum 201. From the library of J. de Koning, see Cat. Van Stockum, 9-10 Dec. 1975, nr. 843.
